Grads at Vinnies

A team of graduates from various departments at Woodside came together to volunteer at the Vinnies Distribution Centre in Canning Vale.

The St Vincent de Paul Society, fondly known as “Vinnies”, is one of Australia’s largest and most highly regarded charities, and also operates in an additional 149 countries worldwide. They aspire for an Australia transformed by compassion and built on justice; they advocate on several pressing social justice issues such as homelessness, poverty and asylum seekers- no work of charity is foreign to them.

The St Vincent de Paul Society provides a helping hand to many West Australians through food assistance, material aid, budget advice, shelter, advocacy, friendship and support. The warehouse team were in need of aid in the lead up to Christmas, specifically with Chirstmas hampers that would be donated to families and those in need during the Christmas period.

Head of Operations, Mitch, introduced the group to the important work Vinnies does in the community, and took them on a fascinating tour of the state-of-the-art facility. He showed the group the entire journey that donated goods take when they arrive at the centre. The team’s tasks were to pre-sort items donated for Christmas hampers which will be given to families in need. The graduates felt that the experience had changed their mindset on this cause and were overwhelmed with how much good there is in the community.

“Appreciation of what others go through”

All items such as coffee, biscuits, pasta and beans were first checked for expiration dates and then sorted into the appropriate bins. They then moved on to an assembly line, packing school supplies for children. After lunch and a quick dash to the amazing on-site op shop, the team made up holiday hampers. The team was so enthusiastic about getting the job done and got through all tasks in record time!

Team members felt that the experience was,

“eye opening”

and that there was an,

“appreciation for how much work volunteers do and how much a few donations can do”
