Turnaround team at AGLG

The final team to go out on a team volunteering day in 2018 were the Turnaround team, who were keen to spend a work day out of the office and in to the tranquil and pristine Mary Carroll Wetland. They would be supporting the Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group (AGLG) and the Friends of Mary Carroll Wetland group with the last of the season’s planting.

The Friends of Mary Carroll Park is a community group that works with the City of Gosnells and various landcare organisations to restore the natural environment of the wetlands located at Mary Carroll Park, Gosnells. The group started out as a small weeding group in the 1970s who were concerned by the deteriorating conditions of the wetlands. The wetlands one of a few remaining important seasonal ecosystems on the Swan Coastal Plain, which is a place of refuge and breeding for water birds.  The park supports a huge number of water and bush birds, lizards, frogs, turtles and insects, which is why rehabilitation and care for the park through weeding foreign, invasive plants and planting native plants that the various animals can use for feed and shelter, is so important.

The initial project was to plant at the bank for the lake, but AGLG were beginning with their planting and needed the water plants to be planted before summer kicks in and the lake dries up. The team did not hesitate to pick up a pair of gumboots and the braver ones, or those who could fit into the boots, jumped into a pair of waders and jumped in and were eager to get into the cool fresh water. Despite the odd splash, getting into the waders was a bit of a novelty and made the otherwise mundane task of planting a bit of an adventure. Two volunteers who were initially uncertain about getting into the waders decided to give it a go and found that it was in fact a more enjoyable task, as it was cooler, easier to dig in the wet soil and to get a good position, and that there were no mozzies to annoy them!

The last Woodside team for the year executed the day in true Woodside fashion by completing all the allocated tasks ahead of schedule!

“Good fun in the sun” [and] “Great teamwork doing something I had not done before”
