Australian Operating Unit Visit St John of God Horizon House to Help Homeless Youth
St John of God Horizon House provides accommodation, support and care for young people between the ages of 16-22. The social outreach aims to break the cycle of homelessness and prepare young people for independent living. There are several houses in Western Australia and a team from Woodside were given the opportunity to visit and help at Horizon House, a house in Perth’s Northern Suburbs.
Horizon House has four residents and after the work of Woodside volunteers is hoping to get in a fifth shortly. The program has three tiers with the first providing members living in the houses with support, care and the opportunity to learn specific life skills. The second tier encourages further independence by offering stop in meetings and support where needed. The final tier offers similar support but primarily through phone calls. The support offered is long term for education, training, employment and life skills development.
The team from Woodside were involved in numerous tasks including installing kitchen cupboards, handiwork around the house, and setting up and relocating furniture. They cleared out a garden area which the residents can now use as a social area that was originally overgrown and not enjoyed. Recently a vegetable patch was planted and the team was able to prepare more ground for future vegetables and fruit to be planted. A feature wall was painted for a new “chill out” room and a gym was set up for the residents to use. Finally a special achievement was moving the office to a different room and preparing another room so a new resident can move in to their special home.
All of these tasks would have taken the staff and residents months to complete so it was incredible for the team to make such a valuable contribution in just one day. Many hands do indeed make light work! The team thoroughly enjoyed the day and opportunity to support the staff and residents in the house. The staff was overwhelmed with the help and were so appreciative of everything achieved. They even put together a special collage of photos for the volunteers after the day. Well done, team!
