Development Planning team volunteer at Djilba Big Day Out in Kings Park
In the Nyoongar seasonal calendar, ‘Djilba’ is the season of conception, also known as the first spring, from August to September. The Djilba Big Day Out, previously known as the Kulunga Katitjin Festival, is a 3-day festival in September, packed full of hands-on activities including Welcome to Country, traditional Nyoongar Dance performances, Aboriginal Art, cultural activities, orienteering, bizarre botanical and more to promote a sustainable and respectful future for all. 1500 primary school students from pre-primary to Year 6 attend the festival with 500 students attending each of the three days.
Held at the Kings Park Botanic Gardens, the Djilba Big Day Out sees the Kings Park Education Team come together with Aboriginal presenters to promote a sustainable and respectful future for all by understanding of the importance of biodiversity and caring for the environment. It is also a way to develop an appreciation of Aboriginal Culture and to foster positive attitudes for a sustainable future.
A large team of 50 people from the Development Planning Team spent their day helping to facilitate and coordinate a variety of aspects of the day. Some of the volunteers were given the role of school group volunteers and were responsible for escorting the school groups between each activity, others were stationed at the activities and helped to facilitate the activity, and the remaining volunteers were appointed as roving ambassadors who helped make the day flow well for all.
The team thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in the activities and learning more about Nynoogar culture and Kings Park & Botanic Garden Authority were extremely grateful for the team’s enthusiastic work, well done!
