Engineering Integrity and Quality Team at Horizon House Young Mother and Baby Program
St John of God’s Horizon House Young Mother and Baby Program provides accommodation and support to at risk and vulnerable young mothers aged 16-22 years who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstances. Horizon House aims to help the young mothers take their pregnancy to term and develop essential life skills that will enable them to transition into independent living.
The Program offers three stages of support which can each be accessed for a period of up to 12 months:
- Accommodation and intensive support during pregnancy and for the first 12 months of the baby's life
- Transitional accommodation and support for young mothers with a child aged up to three years
- Outreach support for young mothers living independently
The Engineering Integrity and Quality team spent their volunteering day attending to a number of maintenance and gardening tasks at the two neighbouring Horizon house homes. Some of tasks the team attended to were clearing the back gardens and creating space for mums and bubs to enjoy, brightening up a counselling room with fresh coats of paint, attending to general maintenance jobs around the home and set up safety gates to ensure the home is child and baby safe.
The staff were extremely grateful for the amount of work the team completed as not only did it save the staff time, it also amounted to several hundreds of dollars in savings - which could then go towards programs and materials for clients.
