Exploration team transform Ability Centre Innaloo home!
Ability Centre is an organisation that helps Western Australians living with disabilities to achieve their dreams and celebrate possibilities. They work closely with the disabled and their families to provide innovative and responsive services that maximise potential and tailor support to suit each individual’s lifestyle.
The team from Woodside Exploration had the opportunity to visit one of Ability Centre’s high care serviced houses located in Innaloo. This shared living home is one of the many options Ability Centre offers their clients. It includes round the clock professional nursing support, provided by registered nurses and complimented by visiting GPs and access to Ability Centre and other community based health services. This house has a beautiful garden which needed some tender loving care and the 24 volunteers were eager to start the garden renovation.
The team was divided into groups to tackle the projects before them. One group set out to trim, prune and cut back rose bushes as well as large hedges and pull out plants that were no longer needed. Another group helped with weeding while others busily mulched the front, side and back of the property. It was a day filled with so much laughter despite the hard work involved.
Everyone concurred that volunteering not only boosted their confidence and well-being, but also increased their sense of awareness of wider social issues beyond the usual working world. One of the volunteers commented, “It’s the feeling of accomplishing something and making a difference when we work together as a team.”
Staff and client were very grateful for the transformation of the rugged over grown area into a beautiful space. It was also added that the job completed in one day by the 24 Woodside volunteers would have taken them months to complete. Great job team!
