Exploration team weeding at Yellagona Regional Park

Friends of Yellagonga (FOY) Regional Park are a group of local enthusiastic conservation volunteers who desire to protect and restore the biodiversity of Perth northern suburb’s regional parks for current and future generations to enjoy. The organisation's main focus is to promote and participate in the conservation, rehabilitation and protection of Yellagonga Regional Park to ensure long-term environmental sustainability and compatible human use. The volunteer run group work together to grow and plant local endemic species in the park and try to keep up with the removal of introduced non-native species.

As the site is so large it is hard to keep up with the removal of introduced plant species, which is why FOY Chairman Kevin called on Volunteering WA for the help and support of a team of volunteers to help. In just a few hours the Exploration team pulled out and cleared the area of weeds.  Kevin then took the team for a walk through the bush and gave them an in-depth explanation and history of the unique native plants that grow in the area. One team member thought the experience was valuable as they:

“ Learnt about the challenges in maintaining open spaces in urban settings that we all take for granted.”

At the end of the day another volunteer added that they:

“ Got through a lot of weeding, [and it] felt good to be out in the open doing physical labour for a good cause with the team mates!”
