People and Global Capability at Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre

A large team from the People and Global Capability team trekked to the Perth Hills to Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre for their team volunteering day. The organisation’s primary work is focused on rescuing and rehabilitating wild black cockatoos in distress. Most of the cockatoos have either been shot, struck by vehicles, fallen, pulled from their nests, or attacked by ravens, cats, or other birds. The centre also houses other native animals for educational purposes, such as Dingos and Emus.

The P&GC team were given the task of tidying and cleaning up the large site in preparation for their upcoming tour day. The team broke up into groups and tackled various parts of the site, some added fresh coats of paint to the restaurant and packed and moved furniture, others were outside scattered through the site weeding, mulching, planting new plants, carrying sand into aviaries and raking leaf litter which was then burnt off.

One team member commented that the positive outcome of the day was:

“Team work and working with people that I don’t normally spend time with and building relationships across teams.”

Kaarakin could not thank the group enough for completing an incredibly long list of tasks off their to-do list and for helping to tidy the site before the tour day.
