Projects Function at Ability Centre

Volunteers working hard

Ability Centre is an organisation that helps Western Australians living with disabilities to achieve their dreams and celebrate possibilities. They work closely with the disabled and their families to provide innovative and responsive services that maximise potential and tailor support to suit each individual’s lifestyle.

On a bright sunny morning in December the Woodside Project Function team gathered at Ability Centre, ready to tackle some gardening.  Their smiles and energy were palpable as they gathered in a conference room to hear a briefing from Renae, Ability Centre’s representative. Renae informed the team that Ability Centre has been a leading provider in the disability sector since its inception in 1951. They currently operate a number of sites that provide accommodation, recreation, therapy, health, assistive technology and employment options to people with disabilities. After a quick tour of the facilities it was time to get to work.

The group split up into three teams, each assigned a different gardening task. Over the course of the next hour and a half weeds were pulled, vast areas of garden bed were mulched, hedges were trimmed and then even more weeds were pulled. Working so diligently in the sun nearly everyone broke a sweat and were happy when it was time for a refreshing morning tea.

After morning tea it was back to work, toiling alongside three of Ability Centre’s maintenance crew. Throughout the day the maintenance crew expressed their deepest appreciation for the volunteer hours the team was putting in. They stressed that the work accomplished in one day by 15 Woodside employees would have taken them months to complete. Many other Ability Centre employees stopped and gave thanks to the Woodside team for offering up their time to make the grounds a more beautiful place for residents, clients and their families.

After devouring a lunch of delicious catered sandwiches, freshly picked strawberries and cold drinks it was back to weeding for a couple hours before the team was done for the day. The intense sun didn’t hamper anyone’s spirits and the smiles continued throughout the day and on the way home.

Great job, team!
