Robyn Lovell helps not for profit organisations identify, assess and manage risk effectively

A Risk Adviser at Woodside, Robyn Lovell recently volunteered her time to put on a Risk Management workshop tailored for senior managers and board members of not-for-profits (NFPs) and volunteer involving organisations (VIOs). Robyn is planning to retire in a few years’ time and, after retirement, she would like to volunteer her time to assist with NFP organisation activities.  Robyn believes that her experience enables her to find out more about various organisations and their culture, activities and approach and, as a result, Robyn can help organisations make good choices and help them add maximum value.

Robyn’s workshop covered principles of effective risk management, and effective processes to best manage risk in an organisation. The workshop presented various tools that enabled attendees to assess and identify risk. Focus was then given to methods of evaluating risk, all of which are necessary to achieve effective risk management. Tools such as the TECOP analysis process, Risk Wheel and the ’Risk-Bow tie’ amongst others were covered.

The workshop was a great success with the majority of attendees leaving with new ideas and tools to implement within their organisations.  Feedback from attendees was very positive; one attendee said, "The session was very well presented and Robyn clearly had a great deal of knowledge on the subject as someone who is very familiar with the process.”

“ I would recommend this activity to other volunteers because I believe it's important to 'give back' to the communities in which we live. We are very lucky to work at a company like Woodside which provides support for our involvement in volunteering.”

From Robyn’s perspective, skills-based volunteering was enjoyable, as she enjoyed being able to share her skill base with a set of people who do not consider it “business as usual.” Robyn also enjoyed the intellectual “stretch” required to ensure the information provided was able to be understood by people who are not part of the Oil & Gas community. In addition, Robyn believes skills-based volunteering is an excellent experience for everyone to hone their skills in many other areas.

In fact, Robyn has already connected other colleagues to the Skills-based Volunteering Program website. Robyn and her project have paved the way for Woodside employees to volunteerin dynamic and innovative ways. Robyn Lovell has demonstrated that employees can support NFPs and VIOs in a way that suits their work style, schedule and skill sets.

“ Very helpful and worthwhile. Thank you for so generously sharing your practical expertise.”
